Kelanawisata.id, Wonosobo – The Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon tradition has once again achieved a proud milestone on the international stage. For the first time, the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon community has been entrusted to represent Indonesia at the 2026 Festival del Globo Tahmek Yucatán, which will take place on August 22–23, 2026, in Yucatán, Mexico.
This participation is particularly special because it was not secured through a registration process but rather through an official invitation from the festival organizers. The invitation was extended as a form of recognition of the existence and reputation of the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon community, which is already well-known among hot air balloon communities in various countries.
This year’s Festival del Globo Tahmek will feature participants from six countries: host country Mexico, France, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, and Indonesia—represented exclusively by the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Community.
Fahmi Hidayat, Head of the Wonosobo Regency Tourism and Culture Office, stated that this trust is a source of pride as well as a major opportunity to introduce Wonosobo’s cultural richness and tourism potential to the international community.
“The participation of the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Community in the Festival del Globo Tahmek is an honor for our region. This event provides an opportunity to introduce Wonosobo’s culture, the creativity of its people, and its various tourism potentials to the world,” he said on Monday, August 3, 2026.
According to Fahmi, the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Festival is no longer merely a local tradition passed down from generation to generation, but has evolved into both a cultural icon and a tourist attraction with strong appeal.
As a representative of the region, Wonosobo will showcase two traditional hot air balloons with special designs. Both balloons will feature various cultural elements and Wonosobo Regency’s premier tourist destinations as a promotional tool for the international community.
“Through the design of the balloons that will be flown, we want to introduce Wonosobo’s rich tourism and cultural heritage to people from various countries, including Latin America. This is part of our regional promotion strategy on a global scale,” he continued.
Promoting the Spirit of International Friendship
At the festival, Indonesia will be represented by Agam Setyobudi, Chair of the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Community, alongside Arma Deni Kurniawandari from Around Me. In addition to participating in the entire series of activities, Arma will also document the journey as part of efforts to promote Wonosobo Hot Air Balloons to a wider audience.
One of the balloons to be flown is designed to blend elements of Indonesian and Mexican culture as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. Meanwhile, the other balloons highlight the cultural identity and rich tourism offerings of Wonosobo Regency.
Agam Setyobudi described the invitation as a form of global recognition of the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon tradition.
“Indonesia is represented solely by Wonosobo. This is both a source of pride and a responsibility for us to demonstrate that the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloons possess the quality, creativity, and cultural value worthy of being introduced on the international stage,” he said.
He explained that the invitation from the Festival del Globo Tahmek organizing committee originated from a recommendation by a participant from Brazil who had previously attended the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Festival in 2025. Through that network, the organizers in Mexico then contacted the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Community and extended a direct invitation.
The balloon preparations were carried out through a collaborative effort by about 20 balloon enthusiasts from various communities in Wonosobo. The entire production process was undertaken together as an expression of collective spirit in representing Indonesia on the international stage.
Although the Indonesian delegation consists of only two people, the balloon flights during the festival will be supported by a local crew arranged by the organizers.
Agam also explained the conceptual differences between the balloon festivals in Mexico and Wonosobo. While in Wonosobo the balloons are flown using a tethered system in accordance with Indonesian aviation safety regulations, in Mexico the balloons will be flown freely using modern methods from the afternoon into the evening, depending on local weather conditions.
“Hopefully, this opportunity will further raise the profile of Wonosobo Hot Air Balloons on the world stage while also inspiring the younger generation to continue preserving the traditions passed down by their ancestors,” he said.
Expanding Networks and Promoting the Region
For the Wonosobo Regency Government, participation in the Festival del Globo Tahmek is not only seen as a form of cultural promotion but also as a strategic step to strengthen Wonosobo’s position as a cultural tourism destination capable of competing on a global scale.
Fahmi believes that this participation will enrich the portfolio of both the Wonosobo Regency Government and the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon Community in international hot air balloon events.
In addition to introducing the region to the global community, the festival also opens opportunities to exchange experiences with hot air balloon communities from various countries, expand cooperation networks, and simultaneously drive innovation in the development of hot air balloon tourism in Wonosobo.
“We hope this participation will have a positive impact on the development of Wonosobo Hot Air Ballooning as a world-class tourist attraction,” he said.
He added that in recent years, various tourism events in Wonosobo have begun to attract international attention.
In addition to the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon tradition, a number of events such as the Mudik Balloon Festival, Java Balloon Attraction, and the Dieng Caldera Race are also becoming increasingly well-known and attracting the interest of tourists and participants from abroad.
Government Support for the Cultural Mission
The Wonosobo Regency Government, through the Tourism and Culture Office, is providing full support for the delegation’s trip to Mexico, both through logistical assistance and financial support within the region’s means.
In addition, the Regent of Wonosobo has been coordinating with various ministries, government agencies, and businesses—including the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, and PT Pertamina (Persero)—to support the implementation of this cultural mission.
“We continue to coordinate with various parties to ensure the delegation’s departure goes smoothly. They are not only representing Wonosobo but also Indonesia on the international stage,” said Fahmi.
A Cultural Heritage Gaining Global Recognition
The participation of Wonosobo’s hot air balloons in the Festival del Globo Tahmek holds even greater significance as it takes place in the same year that Wonosobo’s Traditional Hot Air Balloon Culture was officially designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia.
This tradition has also been recognized as Communal Intellectual Property (KIK), further solidifying the cultural identity of the Wonosobo community.
This recognition serves as a crucial foundation for efforts to preserve and develop Wonosobo Hot Air Balloons as a safe, creative, and internationally competitive cultural tourism attraction.
Through its participation in the 2026 Festival del Globo Tahmek Yucatán, the Wonosobo Regency Government hopes that the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon will become increasingly recognized as an Indonesian cultural icon capable of serving as a vehicle for cultural diplomacy, strengthening regional tourism promotion, expanding international cooperation networks, and driving culture-based creative economic growth.
This participation demonstrates that the tradition born from the Wonosobo community is not only capable of enduring as a cultural heritage but also of evolving to gain recognition on the world stage.
Armed with a spirit of mutual cooperation, community creativity, and support from various stakeholders, the Wonosobo Hot Air Balloon is expected to continue bringing honor to Wonosobo and Indonesia on the international stage.***
