Kelanawisata.id, Yogyakarta – Tugu Yogyakarta has become one of the most recognizable landmarks for travelers exploring the City of Gudeg. Many tourists gathered that morning to enjoy the atmosphere of Jogja (March 28). The Tugu Yogyakarta area is always bustling with tourists these days. Located in the city center, Tugu Yogyakarta is not merely a geographical landmark but also holds a long history and strong philosophical significance dating back to the establishment of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.

Originally, this monument was known as Tugu Golong Gilig, built during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, also known as Prince Mangkubumi. The monument’s upper structure is cylindrical (gilig) with a rounded top (golong). This shape symbolizes the unity between the king and the people. However, after sustaining damage from a major earthquake in the 19th century, the monument was later renovated by the Dutch colonial government into its current form—sleeker with distinctive ornamentation.

The existence of the Yogyakarta Monument is inseparable from the philosophical axis concept designed by Prince Mangkubumi. This imaginary line stretches from Mount Merapi to Parangtritis Beach, with the Yogyakarta Palace as the center or focal point. The Yogyakarta Monument is situated in the northern section.

As times have changed, the area around the Yogyakarta Monument has transformed into a vibrant and dynamic public space. It’s not just an iconic photo spot; visitors can also enjoy various creative activities nearby. The presence of photo booths adds a unique attraction for visitors to capture moments with Yogyakarta’s classic charm. Tourists are willing to wait in line to get a photo with the Yogyakarta Monument as the backdrop.

At night, the atmosphere around the monument becomes even more vibrant with artistic lighting that enhances this historic building. A row of cafes, street vendors, and art communities that frequently hold events in the area further boost its appeal. This makes Tugu Yogyakarta a destination that’s always bustling around the clock.

“I usually come here to the photo booth, then grab a bite at the angkringan… The prices are quite affordable, and the atmosphere is fun, unique, and has a vibe unlike any other. It’s really enjoyable because the atmosphere at Tugu Jogja is one-of-a-kind,” said Putri, a tourist from the Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi area.

As a symbol of the city rich in meaning, Tugu Yogyakarta offers not only visual beauty but also a travel experience full of stories. The blend of history, philosophy, and modern creativity makes this area a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience Yogyakarta's unique character fully.
