Kelanawisata.id, Wonosobo – The phenomenon of extreme cold temperatures, known locally as the “bediding” season in the Dieng region, has once again become a major draw for tourists. The cold weather conditions over the past few weeks have proven to have a positive impact on the increase in tourist visits to Wonosobo Regency.

This was explained by the Acting Head of the Wonosobo Regency Tourism and Culture Office, M. Kristijadi, on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Based on a recap of tourist ticket sales by the Technical Implementation Unit for Tourism Site Management (UPTD), data collected in early May and early June 2026 indicates a significant increase in visitor numbers.

This increase was particularly evident on weekends, when tourists came to enjoy the cool, high-altitude atmosphere of Dieng, as well as to capture the golden sunrise and the seasonal phenomenon of frost, which are major seasonal attractions.

Kristijadi noted that the extreme cold weather has actually had a positive impact on the local tourism sector.
“Based on our monitoring and the visitor data we’ve received, this year’s winter has had a positive impact on tourists’ interest in visiting Dieng. Many tourists specifically come to experience Dieng’s characteristic cold temperatures, enjoy the natural scenery, and hike to Sikunir and Mount Prau, which are famous for their beautiful sunrises,” said Kristijadi.

He explained that visitor patterns in early June showed different characteristics compared to early May. While in May the surge in tourists was largely driven by national holidays and collective leave—with daily visitor numbers reaching 2,000 to 2,500 tickets—in June the increase was more stable and consistent every weekend.

Data shows that during the first weekend of June, the number of visits reached approximately 1,620 tickets per day. This figure indicates that weather conditions and seasonal natural phenomena are the primary motivations for tourists to visit the Dieng area and its surroundings.

According to Kristijadi, this trend suggests that experience-based nature tourism is gaining increasing popularity among tourists. Natural phenomena that occur only at specific times create a strong draw and encourage tourists to travel to Wonosobo.
“The phenomenon of frost and extreme cold temperatures is a unique attraction not found in many other regions of Indonesia. Therefore, this momentum needs to be managed effectively through the provision of accurate information, improved tourism services, and strengthened destination promotion,” he added.

However, the increase in tourist visits amid extreme cold weather conditions must also be balanced with enhanced preparedness and the implementation of safety standards by all tourism industry stakeholders.

The Wonosobo Regency Tourism and Culture Office urges all tourism destination managers, homestay operators, tourism service providers, and hiking trail managers to implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and applicable service standards to ensure the safety, comfort, and security of tourists.

“The surge in tourist visits must be matched by the readiness of destination managers and tourism business operators to implement SOPs and high service standards. Everything from providing weather updates, staff preparedness, safety facilities, to emergency response must be ensured to function optimally,” said Kristijadi.

He also reminded tourists planning to visit the Dieng area or engage in hiking activities to prepare themselves well, as air temperatures from evening through early morning can drop to quite low levels. Tourists are advised to wear layered warm clothing, maintain physical fitness, consume adequate food and beverages, and bring personal gear and medications as needed.

“We urge tourists to always comply with the rules in effect at every tourist destination and hiking trail, follow the instructions of officials, and not push themselves if they are not feeling well. Bringing personal medications and gear appropriate for the weather conditions is essential to prevent health issues while traveling,” he added.

According to him, the safety and comfort of tourists are the top priorities in managing tourism in Wonosobo Regency. Therefore, collaboration between the government, tourism businesses, the community, and tourists is essential to ensure that the peak season can be enjoyed safely, comfortably, and pleasantly by all visitors.

Furthermore, the Wonosobo Regency Government, through the Tourism and Culture Office, is optimistic that the trend of increasing visitor numbers will continue in the coming days. Moreover, on June 12–13, 2026, two major regional events will be held: the Festival Muda Berbudaya and the Wonosobo Night Fashion Carnival, which are projected to attract even more tourists to Wonosobo Regency.

“We hope that the Muda Berbudaya Festival and the Wonosobo Night Fashion Carnival, scheduled for June 12–13, 2026, will serve as an additional catalyst for the local tourism sector. The combination of Dieng’s natural attractions—which are currently entering the winter season—with cultural and creative economy events in the city center is expected to increase the length of tourists’ stays and boost the local economy,” he explained.

His office also hopes that the increase in tourist visits will have a tangible impact on the growth of the tourism business sector, ranging from hotels, homestays, culinary offerings, and tourist transportation to local creative economy actors and MSMEs.

The bediding season, which is expected to continue for some time, presents a strategic opportunity for Wonosobo Regency to strengthen its position as one of Central Java’s premier tourist destinations, particularly for mountain nature tourism and experience-based tourism—which are increasingly popular among both domestic and international travelers.***
