Kelanawisata.id, Yogyakarta - Tapa Bisu is a procession involving a walk around the walls of the Yogyakarta Palace. This procession is part of the court officials’ annual reflection on the passing of time. The Mubeng Beteng Cultural Ceremony is held every night of 1 Suro or 1 Muharram. The Mubeng Beteng procession begins at 12:00 AM local time as the new year begins.
The procession begins with the recitation of Macapat poems after the `Isya prayer. The Macapat recitation is performed by the abdi dalem (royal servants). This Macapat performance takes place at the Kamandungan Lor courtyard. The content recited in the Macapat poems consists of chants of prayers. This activity continues until just before the Mubeng Beteng procession begins.
Following the Macapat recitation, the event continued with remarks by representatives of the Yogyakarta Palace. This year, the remarks were delivered by KPH Purbodiningrat and KPH Yudanegara. As quoted from Kratonjogja.id, in his remarks, KPH Purbodiningrat emphasized that the ceremony serves as a means for reflection and offering prayers.
“May we all receive blessings and prosperity from Allah SWT through this event, and may peace be granted to Yogyakarta in particular, and to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia in general,” stated KPH Purbodiningrat, as quoted from Kratonjogja.id.
As the bell of Kamandungan Lor rang 12 times, KPH Purbodiningrat handed the red-and-white flag to a representative of the Abdi Dalem. This marked the beginning of the Mlampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng procession. The Mubeng Beteng was joined by thousands of people. They walked behind the Abdi Dalem and the klebet-klebet.
The route covered a distance of approximately 5 km. It began at the Kamandungan Lor courtyard and proceeded counterclockwise. Abdi Dalem and participants in the Tapa Bisu were prohibited from wearing footwear during the Mubeng Beteng procession. Additionally, they were forbidden from uttering a single word during the Tapa Bisu Mubeng Beteng. This practice serves as a reflective act regarding the events of the past year.
